Seaford made the long trip across the Sussex coast to meet the leagues unbeaten front-runners Chichester III.

There has been a back to basics approach to the Scarlet’s play since their shock defeat to Midhurst and they continued in the same vain against their confident opponents, winning out 19 to 10.

The Chichester pitch had more slopes than a ski resort; so it was something of a surprise that Seaford appeared more at home than their hosts. Working uphill Seaford drew penalties from Chichester, with which Ben Cox converted one of his first two opportunities.

Simon Baker demonstrated his class; spotting a gap and dinking over for Darren Flynn to collect well and run in Seaford’s only try of the game. Cox converted and the Scarlet’s were undoubtedly in control. Before the break Cox added further to the scoring with a well taken penalty from the right side of the pitch.

At half time Chichester were left scratching their heads, they had demonstrated flashes of quality, but had never been allowed to play. In contrast, Seaford’s XV were all smiles and so to was Head Coach John Crowley.

While, the home side began strong, with fresh impetus and fresh faces (as two players from their 2nd XV were drafted in) Cox increased the score with another penalty. For the next 20 minutes, Chichester could not break down the Seaford defense. The Whitewash became a real possibility and the home side opted to put points on the board with a penalty.

Cox quickly restored the gap of sixteen points and the game was effectively won.

As the game began to wind down a bizarre moment of ‘pinball’ rugby caught the Seaford outside backs off guard and the home side ran in a late try.

Next week Seaford host Burgess Hill as Seaford hope to have a full squad to pick from for the first time this season.

Team: Innis, Lewis, Parker, Diplock, A.Flynn, Upton, Joy, Newby, Baker, D.Flynn (Voice), Hardwick, P.Burns, C.Burns, Sheppard, Cox.

MOM: Daniel Newby – A strong display in set pieces, as well as appearing everywhere around the pitch.
